Kentucky has a rich history of traditional broom making, with the early settlers crafting the bessom broom and the Shakers’ invention of the flat broom. I grew up in a household filled with Shaker antiques and other unique handmade items, all of which gave me a great appreciation for handcrafted things.
My journey into broom making began with self-guided study from books, and more recently, I had the privilege of learning directly from an artisan in Berea, KY. While I continue to craft the traditional brooms that first captivated me as a child, I also enjoy experimenting with new designs and concepts that challenge the definition of what a broom can be. By embracing sustainable, natural materials, I believe we can rediscover our ancestors’ appreciation for the beauty and utility of this humble tool, fostering a deeper connection within our own personal spaces.
